I was born in the British colony of Bermuda, and raised in Bermuda, Salamanca, Spain and Massachusetts, USA. I have lived since 2004 in Glasgow, Scotland, Valencia and Barcelona, Spain, and Hannover, Germany. I have worked in many challenging fields, including as an army non-commissioned officer and an airport policeman. My most enduring calling has been in historical fields. Beginning while still in secondary school, I worked over several years as an assistant curator at the Featherbed Alley Printshop museum, located in the same building as the St. George’s Historical Society Museum in the old garrison town of St. George’s, Bermuda (today a UNESCO World Heritage Site, together with the nearest fortifications). The Curator was Major Donald Henry “Bob” Burns, MC, a distinguished soldier and Guinness World Record holder, and the museum fell under the remit of Lance Furbert, the Director of Forts within the Bermuda Government’s Department of Tourism. With these mentors, and surrounded by the architectural heritage of what had been the Royal Navy’s primary base in North America and the West Indies with an army garrison out of all proportion to the colony’s size and population, I was steeped in the military history and traditions of Bermuda. I built upon this a wider knowledge of the civil and military history of the English-speaking Atlantic, of which Bermuda sits at the hub. I have also had considerable experience as a tourguide, working aboard tourboats operating from the City of Hamilton and the Royal Naval Dockyard in Bermuda.
- I was one of a team of experts organised for the Corporation of St. George’s by Lieutenant-Colonel Brendan O’Donnell Hollis to consider a proposed military museum in the Storekeeper’s Building on Ordnance Island, the former Royal Army Ordnance Corps depot in St. George’s Town, Bermuda.
- In 2003-2004, I assisted in the creation of the “Bermuda’s Defence Heritage Exhibit” of the Bermuda Maritime Museum (now part of the National Museum of Bermuda), in The Keep, Royal Naval Dockyard, Ireland Island, Sandys’ Parish, Bermuda. I was also asked to contribute to a planned companion book.
- In 2007 I assisted the author (and am listed in the acknowledgements) of “A Brave Vessel: The True Story of the Castaways Who Rescued Jamestown and Inspired Shakespeare’s The Tempest“, by Hobson Woodward. Published by the Penguin Group. Penguin Group (USA) Inc., 375 Hudson Street, New York City, New York 10014, USA, 2009. ISBN 978-0-670-02096-6.
- I assisted the authors, and was listed in the acknowledgements, of the book “Wings Over Bermuda: 100 Years of Aviation in the West Atlantic”, by Ewan Partridge and Tom Singfield. National Museum of Bermuda Press, 2014. ISBN: 978-1-927750-32-2.
- In 2014, I wrote the article “The Royal Lincolnshire Regiment and the Bermuda Volunteer Rifle Corps; The Royal Anglian Regiment and the Bermuda Regiment, 1914 to 2014” for the The Royal Anglian and Royal Lincolnshire Regimental Association (http://www.thelincolnshireregiment.org/bvrc.shtml).
- In 2015, I assisted the author, and was listed in the acknowledgements, of the book “Royal Bermuda Regiment: 50 Years Strong” (National Museum of Bermuda Press, ISBN: 9781927750971), an official history of the Royal Bermuda Regiment by Tony McWilliam.
- Also in 2015, I assisted the Royal Bermuda Regiment with content for its official 50th anniversary commemorative website (www.br50.bm) and Facebook page (http://www.facebook.com/BermudaRegiment50).
- I was consulted by Afflare Films in the making, and was listed in the acknowledgements, of the award-winning documentary “In The Hour of Victory” (http://repflicks.net/ostrowandcompany.com/film_detaild8db.html?film=In%20The%20Hour%20Of%20Victory) based on a book of the same name by former Commissioner of the Bermuda Police Service Jonathan Smith.
- I have written two books, “Fortress Bermuda: A visitor’s guide to the naval and military heritage sites of the Imperial Fortress colony of Bermuda” and “Aquatic Bermuda: The Islands as Seen From The Water”. I am completing another book, which is a study of the multi-generational ties between the British Army and Bermuda.
- My photography has been used by The Royal Gazette, Encyclopedia Britannica, the book “Wings Over Bermuda: 100 Years of Aviation in the West Atlantic”, and in my own books. It has also been requested for inclusion (but not included) in the National Geographic documentary film “Megafactories: Armoured Troop Carrier”.
- In 2016, I was consulted by Government House, Bermuda, for the benefit of the Bermudian representatives to the official commemoration of the 1916 Battle of the Somme at Thiepval.
- In 2016, I was consulted by The Royal Gazette in relation to the centennial of the 1916 Battle of the Somme. (http://www.royalgazette.com/news/article/20160701/relatives-commemorate-brave-somme-heroes)
